It is also worth seeing some old and historic monasteries as the Monastery of Aghia Triada ton Tsagarolon (Holy Trinity) built in the 17th century, some 20km far from Chania at the North; the Monastery of Kyria ton Angelon tou Gouvernetou, of the 16th century, some 25km far from Chania at the north and 4,5km at the north of the Monastery of Aghia Triada; the Monastery of Aghios Ioannis Erimitis or Xenos (St. John), more at the north, dating back to the 6th or 7th century, is found within a steep ravine where one may arrive by stepping down 385 steps. The Catholicon of the Monastery has been dug in the rock and it is considered that it is the first monastery built on the island. At the same area, between the two monasteries it is found the cave of Arkoudiotissa or Arkouda; a stalagmite evoking a bear („arkouda” in Greek) gave the name to this impressive cave, where there have been found traces of worship of Artemis and today there is a small church in honor of Virgin Mary. One of the worth visiting places are the tombs of the Venizelos family, where has been buried the important Greek politician and prime minister of the early 20th century, Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936). Three local feasts („panighyri”) take place in the village on the 29th of August in honor of St. John (Monastery of St John), on the 8th of September in honor of Panaghia (Kounoupidiana and Sternes) and Aghia Triada. Numerous hotels, rooms to let and studios are offered for accommodation. Plenty of taverns, restaurants and cafes are available for delicious food and drink. Also in some of the beaches sea sport facilities are available; windsurfing is the best choice at the area.   Why Greece?
